 Rembrandt Lighting

In this assignment we were taught different lighting angles like split, butterfly, rim, loop, rembrandt, side lighting and more, to result different feelings and tones in a photograph. Using rembrandt lighting we experimented and created a beautiful picture.

What is rembrandt lighting?

Rembrandt lighting is a classic lighting technique often used in portrait photography and cinematography to create dramatic, moody, and dimensional images. Named after the Dutch painter Rembrandt, who often used this style in his paintings, the technique is defined by a triangle or diamond-shaped patch of light that appears under the subject’s eye on the shadowed side of the face. This effect is achieved by placing a single light source at approximately 45 degrees to one side of the subject and slightly above eye level, casting shadows that sculpt the face while leaving that small triangle of light.

Rembrandt lighting is particularly flattering because it adds depth and a three-dimensional quality to the face, making it ideal for portraits that aim to convey emotion, strength, or timelessness. It works best with subjects who have defined cheekbones or facial features, but it can be adjusted to suit different face shapes. Often paired with a reflector or a subtle fill light to soften shadows, this technique balances contrast without losing detail. Its artistic roots and powerful visual impact make Rembrandt lighting a favorite among photographers and filmmakers who want to blend classical aesthetics with modern portraiture.

Process

At I first asked my model to wear a shalwaar kameez, but it felt really bland and plain. So I asked him to change into something that the light would reflect on, and so he wore shinny puffer jacket with a shirt. And as cherry on top, I added some flowers in his hair.

I placed a light source with a soft box attached at a 45 degrees angle to create a triangle under the eye. At first I surely did not get it right.
Like this one:

But later after alot of practice I finally got it right.

Final Picture

I really liked how it turned out. In future, I would defiantly like to experiment creating the rembrandt with different colors.

Word TO Photograph

What does word to photograph mean?

Word to Photograph is a creative concept that involves transforming written or spoken words into visual imagery. It’s the process of interpreting language—whether it’s a single word, a phrase, a poem, or a story—into a photograph that captures the mood, meaning, or essence of that text. This approach challenges the photographer to think symbolically and emotionally, using elements like lighting, color, composition, and subject matter to visually represent the chosen words. For example, the word "freedom" might inspire an image of an open sky, a bird in flight, or someone running through a wide field. "Loneliness" could be visualized through an empty bench, soft lighting, or an isolated figure in a large space. It’s not about being literal, but about conveying the feeling or concept behind the word. This technique encourages creativity, storytelling, and personal expression. It allows photographers to explore language from a visual perspective and deepen the emotional impact of both the word and the image. Whether used in personal projects, exhibitions, or educational settings, Word to Photograph helps bridge the gap between language and visual art, inviting viewers to experience familiar words in entirely new and meaningful ways.

Process

The words I chose were "Serenity" and "Nostalgia". It was really fun driving around and seeing the world with an eye of camera.

This project was done in the early days of the year. I searched for places that basically screamed serenity or retro. And eventually I came across a forest like place in NUST. I got out and saw the way the sun hit the leaves. I was amused of it and took my camera out and started clicking pictures. And the I got THE picture.
I drove further and saw a cafe under construction. I was too scared to get out of the car so I took the picture from inside and it was THE picture aswell.

Light Painting

What Does Light Painting Mean?

Light painting is a photographic technique where light is used as a tool to "paint" or draw within a long-exposure photograph. In this creative process, the camera shutter is left open for an extended period—usually several seconds to minutes—while the photographer or an assistant moves a light source through the frame. This light source can be anything from a flashlight or sparkler to LED strips or even a phone screen. The result is a striking image where the paths of light become vivid, glowing lines, shapes, or abstract patterns captured against a darker background.

Light painting allows for a high level of artistic freedom and experimentation. It can be used to create surreal portraits, dynamic landscapes, or imaginative, motion-based artworks. Photographers can either illuminate subjects selectively or use the light itself as the subject. Timing, precision, and darkness are key elements for successful light painting. This technique is often used in both fine art photography and commercial shoots to add visual drama and intrigue. What makes light painting especially unique is that it blends photography with performance, turning the act of taking a picture into a live, hands-on art form. Each photo becomes a one-of-a-kind blend of light, time, and motion.

Process:

I was travelling at the time when back at college my class fellows were learning light painting. When I came back I Learned it from the internet.
I practiced quite a few times until I created a story in my mind for the picture.

I set up my camera on a tripod stand with Low ISO around 160 , Wide aperture f/8 and shutter speed 13 seconds. At first I failed but then I finally made my image.

Final Picture

I call this a broken angel. Instead of having two wings, it had one. It represents the people who wants to fly but they are unable to. They can't achieve their dreams and just suffocate in their surroundings.
It has 4 different colors representing 4 different emotions. Anger (red), Blue (sadness), Purple (fear), green (depression).
